How it works
The cost of an hour of downtime comes from two places: people who cannot work and revenue that stops. Lost productivity is the number of people affected times their loaded hourly cost times how much of their work actually stops. Lost revenue is your hourly revenue times the share of it that depends on the systems that are down.
Each outage also has direct recovery costs, such as emergency IT help, overtime, and replacement hardware. Multiply by how often outages happen and you have an annual number you can weigh against prevention.
The default hourly cost reflects the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics average for private industry, $46.89 per hour worked in wages and benefits as of June 2026. Replace it with your own figure for a more accurate result.
